What Is Paediatrics?
Paediatrics is exclusively dedicated to the health and development of infants, children and adolescents, supporting their physical growth, emotional wellbeing and developmental progress from birth up until teenage years. Although many childhood illnesses are temporary and quite common, early health experiences have the ability to influence long-term health in adulthood. This is why care across paediatrics places strong emphasis on prevention, early identification and continuity of care.
Children’s bodies function very differently from adults. Their immune systems are still maturing. Their organs respond differently to illness and medication and symptoms can present in subtle or unexpected ways. The role of a paediatric doctor is to recognise these differences and signs and to also distinguish between normal developmental variation and situations that require closer assessment or follow-up.
Families seek paediatric care for many reasons, usually for routine wellness check-ups, growth monitoring and immunisations. Sometimes visits may also be prompted by other concerns around feeding, sleep, infections, behaviour or development. In paediatrics, listening carefully and guiding families is just as important as diagnosis and treatment, particularly when children are too young to explain and articulate how they feel.
NMC provides broad paediatric care for infants, children and adolescents at every stage of growth across all our hospitals and clinics in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and Al Ain. We approach care recognising paediatrics is rarely one-dimensional. Children can present with symptoms that evolve over time, or ones that present as an overlap across systems or those that require close monitoring rather than immediate intervention. Because of this, care built around continuity, careful assessment and long-term support is the only model we choose to follow.
Our paediatricians manage a wide spectrum of health concerns covering routine childhood illnesses, preventive care, acute medical conditions and complex and long-standing disorders. We assess each child in our care within the context of their developmental stage taking into consideration their medical history, family environment and emotional wellbeing. All the treatment plans we design and put together not only address immediate symptoms, but also are tailored to support healthy growth, learning and resilience over time.
Because of the nature of childhood conditions and their effect on long-term health, paediatric conditions often require collaboration across specialties. A child with feeding difficulties may need input from gastroenterology and nutrition, developmental concerns may involve neurology, psychology or early intervention services and children with chronic conditions may often need coordinated follow-up across multiple disciplines. At NMC, paediatricians work closely with neonatal teams, surgeons, cardiologists, endocrinologists, neurologists, emergency physicians and allied health professionals to ensure care is integrated and well-coordinated.
Our paediatric care ecosystem is supported by modern clinical facilities and child-appropriate technology across every location in the UAE. Fully fledged diagnostic services, comprehensive laboratory testing and imaging are readily accessible in our hospitals which allows us to deliver timely and accurate assessments. We’ve designed our inpatient and outpatient areas to be child-friendly, offering comfort, safety and parental involvement throughout care. We use only the latest technology, guaranteeing accuracy and precise monitoring, while clinical decisions made across functions remain guided by experience, judgement and individual child needs.
Children move through stages of growth and development far more rapidly than adults. Their immune systems are constantly maturing, their nutritional needs shift and they face physical or emotional challenges which can be unpredictable. We also recognise that when a child is unwell, the emotional weight this can place on families. For many parents, uncertainty can be as difficult as the diagnosis itself and because of this our teams at NMC place strong emphasis on clear explanations, shared decision-making and realistic guidance. Care is delivered at a pace that allows families to feel informed, supported and confident in the next steps whether a child is visiting for a routine check-up or managing a complex condition,
