Paediatric Neurology

Overview

What is Paediatric Neurology?

The specialised field of paediatric neurology diagnoses and manages conditions that affect a child's nervous system which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. A paediatric neurologist, casually referred to as a neurologist for kids, looks at how these systems develop and function from infancy through adolescence. This subspeciality, unlike adult neurology, considers the unique challenges of a growing body. It specialises in early intervention which can significantly influence a child's long-term development and quality of life. Treating conditions is a large part of the job but the goal is much larger. It's to support each child in reaching their full potential, addressing concerns that range from common headaches to complex developmental disorders.

Types of Neurological Conditions

Some present from birth and others acquired later, children can experience a wide range of neurological issues. The causes vary, but all require a careful and individualised approach.

Epilepsy and seizure disorders are some of the most common neurological issues children face with recurrent, unprovoked seizures being the hallmark of epilepsy. This can range from absence seizures (staring spells) to convulsions. We run a dedicated first seizure clinic to evaluate "funny turns" and determine if they are epileptic in nature. Frequent or severe headaches, including migraines, are a common reason for referral.

Some children struggle with neurodevelopmental disorders which affects how their brain grows and learns. Conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, speech and language delay and coordination difficulties (dyspraxia) fall under this umbrella. Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders that affect movement and posture, caused by an insult to the developing brain.

Neuromuscular disorders are another group of conditions affecting the nerves and muscles that control movement, including muscular dystrophies, hypotonia (low muscle tone) and myasthenia gravis. Movement disorders can include tics, dystonia (involuntary muscle contractions) and other conditions affecting the control of movement.

Lastly, neurogenetic and metabolic disorders like inherited conditions such as neurofibromatosis or tuberous sclerosis that affect the nervous system are also treated under paediatric neurology.

Knowing when to seek expert advice can be concerning for any parent and it's always best to consult a paediatric neurologist if anything unusual is noticed in your child's development or behaviour.

If parents have developmental concerns like if a child is not meeting expected milestones for their age, such as sitting, walking or talking or are exhibiting behaviour like unexplained fits or staring spells that look like a seizure, convulsion or a brief period of unresponsiveness should be investigated.

Persistent or severe headaches, especially if they wake the child from sleep or are accompanied by vomiting should be assessed immediately.

Loss of skills like losing abilities they once had, such as language or motor skills and noticeable weakness in an arm or leg, or a significant change in coordination or walking could signify a neurological issue. Behavioural or learning difficulties and significant challenges with attention, learning, or social interaction that impact daily life also fall within this umbrella.

Looking to understand a child's story in-depth, diagnosis in paediatric neurology is a thorough process. Detailed consultations are conducted where we evaluate a child's developmental history, specific concerns and any family history of neurological conditions. Reflexes, muscle strength, coordination and sensory responses are all assessed, through a comprehensive neurological examination.

Advanced diagnostics support clinical evaluation, to build a complete picture. Electroencephalogram (EEG) testing is used to record the brain's electrical activity and is crucial for diagnosing epilepsy and determining seizure types. We offer routine, sleep-deprived and overnight video-EEG monitoring in a child-friendly setting.

We use MRI and PET scans for detailed imaging of the brain's structure which helps identify abnormalities, from developmental issues to the effects of injury. To help identify underlying genetic, metabolic or inflammatory causes for neurological symptoms, we use blood tests and lumbar puncture.

We conduct neurodevelopmental assessments by our multidisciplinary team, including psychologists and therapists to help diagnose conditions like autism or ADHD.

  • Epilepsy and Seizure Disorders
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and ADHD
  • Cerebral Palsy and related movement disorders
  • Frequent or Chronic Headaches and Migraines
  • Global Developmental Delay and Intellectual Disability
  • Speech, Language, and Motor Skills Delays
  • Genetic and Metabolic Disorders affecting the nervous system
  • Neuromuscular Disorders, such as muscular dystrophies
  • Neuro-inflammatory conditions, like paediatric multiple sclerosis
  • Neurogenetic conditions like Tuberous Sclerosis
  • Tics and Tourette Syndrome

The philosophy of our paediatric neurology care is built on a family-centred, multidisciplinary approach. We know that a neurological diagnosis affects every part of a child's and family's life. Treatment is never a one-size-fits-all plan. Beginning with a precise diagnosis, we always explore all avenues. This includes expert management with anti-seizure medications, for epilepsy. Our epileptologists can assess suitability for alternative therapies like the ketogenic diet, vagus nerve stimulation or epilepsy surgery for complex or drug-resistant epilepsy.

Our paediatric neurologists work closely with a team of specialists to help children with neurodevelopmental disorders like autism or ADHD. Teams of clinical psychologists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and physiotherapists work together to create a holistic, child-centred plan. These plans may involve behavioural therapy, educational support and, where appropriate, medication.

For children with cerebral palsy, this integrated neurorehabilitation service is vital, helping maximise their independence and quality of life. Our network of facilities across the UAE is equipped to provide consistent, compassionate care, whether a child requires long-term monitoring for a chronic condition or a swift assessment for a new concern.

Consultant paediatric neurologists with extensive training from leading international centres and deep experience in the region lead our teams, supported by epileptologists, neurodevelopmental specialists, rehabilitation therapists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech and language pathologists. A collaborative structure helps us ensure that every child benefits from a wide range of expertise. Known not only for their clinical skill, our consultants lead with their ability to connect with children and their families. Working as partners, they listen to the concerns of both child and parents, explaining complex information in a clear and reassuring way. Our specialists offer a trusted and supportive partnership for families seeking expert paediatric neurology in UAE, whether in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not necessarily. Many children with epilepsy will outgrow their seizures and can eventually stop medication under the close guidance of their paediatric neurologist. The treatment plan is highly individualised and are based on the epilepsy type and how the child responds to therapy.
Any previous medical records, reports of scans or tests and a list of current medications would be very helpful. School reports can be useful for developmental concerns. For seizures, a video of the event, if you have one, can be incredibly valuable for the doctor.
Migraines in children can be different from adult migraines. They may be shorter and felt on both sides of the head. Nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light or sound and a desire to lie down in a dark, quiet room are very common signs. A paediatric neurologist can help distinguish migraine from other types of headache.
