What Is Orthopaedics?
Orthopaedics is dedicated to the overall health of our musculoskeletal system. This includes bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons which are the structures that allow our bodies to move, carry weight and stay balanced. The musculoskeletal system works quietly in the background of everyday life. We rely on it when we walk, lift, sit, stretch, work and rest. Many people associate orthopaedics with broken bones or sports injuries whilst in reality, its scope of care extends much further. Orthopaedic doctors diagnose and manage a wide range of conditions like everyday joint pain and age-related wear to more complex spinal disorders and trauma, all of which can affect quality of life.
People can be referred to orthopaedics for many reasons. Long-standing joint pain, stiffness that limits mobility, swelling, deformity, or injuries that have not healed as expected all warrant a visit to the orthopaedics department. When something is not working as it should, pain, stiffness or reduced movement can slowly begin to interfere with even the simplest daily activities. An orthopaedic doctor or orthopaedic surgeon is trained to understand how these systems interact, what may be causing discomfort or dysfunction and how best to restore movement and stability. Sometimes orthopaedic care comes in the form of conservative care such as physiotherapy, guided rehabilitation or injections. In other cases, surgery may be necessary.
Orthopaedic care on the other hand, plays an important role in managing chronic conditions like arthritis, spinal disorders and degenerative joint disease, where steady monitoring and long-term planning matter. It’s rarely one-size-fits-all specialty. Care can often change depending on age, lifestyle, overall health and how a condition is affecting daily life.
At NMC Hospitals and Clinics, orthopaedic care is delivered with the understanding that no two patients ever experience pain or movement issues in the same way. Musculoskeletal problems can affect work, sleep, independence and confidence. For that reason, care is a partnership between us and our patients and is rarely limited to a single visit.
Across our hospitals and clinics in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and Al Ain, our orthopaedic teams manage a large scope of conditions that covers anything from simple injuries to more complex surgical cases. We use both non-surgical and surgical pathways, depending on what is appropriate for the individual.
Our orthopaedics departments look after patients faced with fractures, joint disorders, sports injuries, spinal conditions, soft tissue injuries and age-related wear and tear. We treat children, adults and older patients, adapting care to different stages and ages of life. Infants with birth-related fractures and adults who require joint replacement or spine procedures, all receive treatment plans that are built carefully and adjusted over time. Each of our patient’s journey begins with a detailed assessment, supported by accurate imaging and diagnostics. This allows us to to warrant treatment decisions that are thoughtful and appropriate.
Orthopaedic conditions are often closely connected to lifestyle, occupation, overall health and activity levels. Because of this, our orthopaedic doctors work closely and holistically, with specialists in physiotherapy, rehabilitation medicine, radiology, pain management, neurology and internal medicine. This integrated approach across all our specialties, allows us to look beyond isolated symptoms and focus on restoring function, reducing pain and supporting long-term musculoskeletal health.
Orthopaedic care relies heavily on precise diagnosis and well-supported treatment planning. Within our larger care model, advanced facilities and technology play a quiet but important role. Our facilities boast diagnostic imaging such as digital X-rays, MRI and CT scanning to support accurate assessment. We use minimally invasive surgical techniques when and where suitable to help reduce recovery time and hospital stay. We weave rehabilitation and physiotherapy services into treatment plans early, rather than added as an afterthought. We also house operating theatres designed to support a wide range of orthopaedic procedures, from fracture fixation and arthroscopy to joint replacement and spinal surgery. All our facilities are supported by experienced theatre teams, orthopaedic-trained nurses and rehabilitation specialists who work together to ensure continuity of care.
Rehabilitation is a key part of orthopaedic recovery. Our physiotherapy and rehabilitation services are closely integrated with orthopaedic care, which allows patients to begin guided movement and strengthening at the right time.
Orthopaedic recovery is rarely ever instant. Progress often comes in stages. Our teams understand this which is why we focus on realistic outcome. Steady improvement and long-term joint and bone health, rather than short-term fixes, are our goals.
