What is Otology?
Falling within Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgery, otology is highly focused and exclusively dedicated to the ear helping diagnose, manage and surgically treat conditions affecting it. An otologist, as opposed to a general ENT surgeon, possesses advanced fellowship-trained expertise specifically in the complex structures of the temporal bone, hearing apparatus and balance system.
Otology treats anything from common complaints like recurrent infections and impacted wax to intricate microsurgery of the middle ear and skull base, addressing the full spectrum of ear disorders. Otologists treat disease as part of their practice but they also help preserve our hearing and balance, which are two of our most delicate senses. The ability to hear clearly and feel steady on one's feet is fundamental to communication, independence and quality of life.
