Diabetes

Overview

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a lifelong condition affecting how our body turns food into energy. When we eat, our body breaks down food into glucose which is a form of sugar that then enters our bloodstream. When this happens, our pancreas releases a hormone known as insulin. Insulin acts like a key, allowing glucose to enter our cells and be used as fuel.

In diabetes, this process doesn’t work as it should. This happens for two reasons, either our body doesn’t make enough insulin, or our body is unable to effectively use the insulin it makes. What this does is it causes glucose to build up in our blood instead of fuelling our cells. If left untreated, over time, high blood glucose can have a detrimental effect on the body, with an ability to damage our heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves. Falling under endocrinology, managing diabetes is essential for long-term health and to prevent complications from developing down the line. Working with a diabetes specialist can make all the difference.

Types of Diabetes

Two types of diabetes exist, Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune condition and develops when the body’s immune system begins attacking the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Most often diagnosed in children and young adults; this type requires lifelong insulin therapy. Type 2 Diabetes is a more common form occurring when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn’t produce enough. Typically developing in adults, it is increasingly seen in younger people nowadays with family history and lifestyle being key factors.

Other forms include Gestational Diabetes, which can occur during pregnancy and Pre-diabetes, which serves as a warning stage where blood sugar is elevated but not yet at diabetic levels. To prevent progression to Type 2 diabetes, early intervention at this stage is crucial.

Patients should consider speaking with a diabetes specialist if they find themselves experiencing persistent symptoms like increased thirst, frequent urination, unexplained fatigue or sudden weight loss. Other signs like blurred vision, slow-healing wounds or tingling in the hands or feet are also subtle signs indicating the body is struggling with insulin problems.

Patients who having a family history of diabetes, are overweight, live a sedentary lifestyle or have conditions like high blood pressure, PCOS or have had gestational diabetes in the past, have an increased risk. Early consultation with a trusted diabetes specialist at NMC Hospital and Clinic across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and Al Ain can help patients gain control and protect their long-term health.

Our specialists perform a full review of symptoms, medical history and family history which marks the start of the process of investigations. This is followed by a physical examination. We conduct specific blood tests that measure blood glucose levels, which help us get closer to a diagnosis. A fasting plasma glucose test is usually the first line of testing, which is done after an overnight fast, to measure blood sugar level. Our specialists also use an oral glucose tolerance test frequently, which check blood sugar levels after fasting that’s as well repeated again two hours after consuming a sugary drink.

For a longer-term view on overall progressions over two to three months, the HbA1c test is an accurate tool performed, to help indicate average blood sugar level. These tests allow our specialists to determine not only the presence of diabetes but also its type and severity. This forms the basis for a treatment strategy that’s truly personalised and targeted at NMC.

Frequently Asked Questions

It’s a lifelong condition but highly manageable. An individualised treatment plan tailored just for you will be put together. It will mostly consist of consistent monitoring and healthy lifestyle changes to control blood sugar levels. Eventually, the bigger goal is to allow individuals to lead full, active lives and prevent serious complications.
A cornerstone of managing diabetes effectively is diet. Certified dietitians will provide personalised nutritional counselling, creating a balanced, sustainable eating plan to regulate blood sugar levels, manage weight, and support overall health. This is done all while taking into account personal preferences and cultural dietary habits.
After childbirth, once pregnancy hormones return to normal levels, gestational diabetes typically resolves. It then, however, becomes a risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life. For this reason, we strongly recommend postpartum follow-up and ongoing lifestyle management.
