Dr. Rema completed her MBBS from Govt Medical college, Kozhikode in 1992, followed by DNB in Ophthalmology from renowned Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai during the period 1993-96. She was conferred FRCS in Ophthalmology from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburg in 1999. To support her special interest in the field of retina she underwent a training in Retinal Lasers from the famous L. V. Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad in 2003.
Dr. Rema started her career in Ophthalmology as Consultant Ophthalmologist at The Eye Foundation, Coimbatore, India where she worked for 2 years.
