Post Natal Ward

Overview

What is Postnatal Care?

Postnatal care is part of obstetrics and is dedicated entirely to helping a mother and her newborn heal fully following childbirth. While a standard postpartum check looks at basic physical healing, specialist postnatal care actively manages the profound physical, hormonal and emotional transition of the fourth trimester.

It is a proactive partnership that begins immediately after delivery and extends through the critical first weeks and months post pregnancy. Consultants and specialist midwives in addition to treating symptoms, provide integrated support for well-rounded healing. This includes support for breastfeeding, mental health, physical rehabilitation and newborn care, ensuring a confident and healthy start for the whole family.

Types of Post Natal Care

Built on several interconnected pillars, the approach we take at NMC is one that moves towards a complete recovery post pregnancy. Physical recovery is foundational but post-natal care manages all facets of post-delivery healing, from both a vaginal birth and a Caesarean section. Wound care, pain management and guidance are all included during this journey, helping the body as it returns to its pre-pregnancy state.

Emotional and psychological support are equally critical. Our teams create a space that feels safe, especially for those navigating the common baby blues, anxiety or those experiencing significant postpartum depression. Early intervention is important to tackle this and specialist referral, when needed, is provided. Infant feeding and lactation support is a third care line where our certified lactation consultants help mothers establish successful breastfeeding or bottle-feeding. We address challenges that may interfere with this process, like latching difficulties or low milk supply. We track a baby’s health through thorough newborn care guidance and monitoring like checking vitals, monitoring weight and providing parental education.

Mothers should never feel that requiring extra support is a shortcoming. Asking for help is a sign of strength. Mothers should consult a specialist without hesitation if they find themselves experiencing persistent physical concerns like heavy bleeding, signs of infection or severe perineal or abdominal pain.

Significant emotional changes are another key indicator that support is needed. If feelings of sadness, anxiety or overwhelm are intense, persistent and they start interfering with daily care for self and baby, it is time to reach out. Breastfeeding challenges that cause significant pain and frustration should be looked into as should concerns pertaining to the baby's intake. The body is experiencing physiological, psychological and emotional changes so if something doesn’t feel right, as minor as it may seem, our team is available to help.

Postnatal care at NMC is delivered through a holistic framework, following a detailed assessment. It explores the birth experience in depth, looking at current physical symptoms, emotional state and how patients are managing daily tasks. We cover the basics such as vital signs and offer wound healing and uterine involution. Overall recovery is all assessed in-depth.

We then conduct structured evaluations of core domains, essential for a healthy post-partum period. Starting with a feeding assessment through which we observe technique and effectiveness. This is followed by a screening for postnatal mood disorders, where we use validated tools to review the health and development of a newborn. This allows us to identify issues that may not be obvious, like infections and subtle contributors, such as a mild thyroid imbalance. All plans created are truly personalised to match individual needs.
