Labour and Delivery Suite

Overview

What are Labour and Delivery Suites?

A labour delivery suite is a specially equipped unit within a hospital. It’s designed to provide comprehensive and compassionate care for women through the final stages of pregnancy, childbirth and the period immediately after post-partum.

A location for both delivery and recovery, a labour and delivery suite represents an integrated model of care. A multidisciplinary team of obstetricians, midwives, neonatal specialists and nurses collaborate to ensure the safety and well-being of both mother and baby. Suites are fully equipped for all birth types including a natural birth, assisted delivery and Caesarean sections. Advanced foetal monitoring and neonatal resuscitation equipment are available across all suites. The objective is a set up that makes the birthing experience as positive and reassuring as possible.

Types of Maternity and Delivery Care

Every pregnancy journey is unique. Our Labour and Delivery Suites at NMC Hospital and Clinics are equipped to support a full spectrum of birthing plans and medical needs. Care for low-risk natural births is available, where patients will receive midwifery-led support, and minimal intervention is prioritised in a homelike setting. We provide continuous electronic foetal monitoring and facilities for assisted deliveries, including ventouse or forceps, for births requiring more medical oversight.

For planned or emergency Caesarean sections, our on-site operating theatres are staffed 24/7 for. We are equipped and have the capability to manage high-risk pregnancies through immediate access to specialist obstetricians and neonatal intensive care support when needed. This ensures a seamless transition of care for both mother and newborn.

The process of care in our suite begins with an assessment of what state you are in. A review includes pregnancy history, a physical examination and monitoring of vital signs and contractions. Continuous electronic foetal monitoring (CTG) is often used to track the baby’s heart rate in relation to contractions, providing real-time data on their well-being.

An ultrasound scan may be performed for a more detailed assessment, to check the baby’s position, placental location and amniotic fluid levels. Our specialist staff are trained to interpret these diagnostics to guide the progression of labour with a safe delivery as our top priority.

Our maternity packages are thoughtfully designed. They are structured to provide comprehensive care that covers the essential stages of delivery and the immediate postnatal period. Between our facilities in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and other Emirates, specific amenities may vary slightly. Our core packages typically include the following key elements:

  • Antenatal Care: This is a final pre-admission consultation with an obstetrician to confirm birth plans.
  • Accommodation: A private, comfortable room is provided in our labour and delivery suite or maternity ward.
  • Delivery Care: We offer full management of labour and delivery by our specialist team.
  • Anaesthetist Services: Fees are covered within the package for the anaesthetist for Caesarean sections or epidural analgesia.
  • Postnatal Stay: Nursing care for mother and newborn is provided for the standard duration.
  • Newborn Care: Essential paediatric checks, vaccinations and basic screenings are all covered.
  • Nutrition: All meals for the mother during the hospital stay are included.
  • Support and Guidance: Lactation support and access to our Mabrook Al Baby programme is included, depending on the package.

We recommend patients contact their preferred NMC facility directly to choose the package that aligns perfectly with their birth plan and for a complete, detailed list of inclusions.

Our care philosophy at NMC is to offer labour and delivery that’s centred on safety, support and shared decision-making. From the moment patients arrive, they are supported by a dedicated team. We encourage personalised birth plans and, where clinically appropriate, support natural pain relief methods as well as provide access to epidural analgesia.

Our obstetricians and midwives are experts in supporting vaginal births after Caesarean (VBAC). We employ modern surgical techniques aimed at promoting quicker recovery for Caesarean deliveries.
