Antental Care

Overview

What is Antenatal Care?

Antenatal care is proactive healthcare that’s provided to women throughout their pregnancy journey. It involves more than simple routine check-ups and is along the lines of a continuous partnership between expectant mothers and our consultant obstetricians and midwives.

This dedicated antenatal care focuses on monitoring the health and development of both mother and baby, from the earliest confirmation of pregnancy right through to labour. Its approach looks at the complete picture which can be anything from managing the physiological changes of pregnancy, screening for potential complications, to providing the essential education and emotional support that empowers women. Supporting a healthy pregnancy is a foundation that prepares families for a confident transition to parenthood.

Types of Antenatal Care and Packages

Our care pathways are designed to suit different needs as we understand that every pregnancy is unique. Tailored antenatal packages are typically the way we deliver antenatal care. This allows for a clear, cost-effective schedule of essential consultations, scans and tests. Our standard package offers the recommended schedule of visits with key milestone scans for low-risk, healthy pregnancies.

We provide more intensive consultant-led care with increased monitoring for first-time mothers. The same is provided for those with pre-existing medical conditions like diabetes or hypertension or pregnancies with twins. This might include more frequent growth scans, specialised foetal medicine input and close collaboration with other specialists like endocrinologists. For reassurance, we also offer early pregnancy care in the first trimester and design dedicated packages for those seeking a specific type of birth experience.

The first antenatal care appointment is recommended as soon as a positive pregnancy test comes through. By the 8th to 10th week of pregnancy, ideally, this initial visit should take place. Starting care early is crucial for accurate dating of the pregnancy. This is when we begin initiating important first-trimester screenings and begin vital nutritional guidance like supplementing with folic acid. The earlier the better, allowing discussions and management plans for pre-existing health conditions that may interfere with pregnancy. Early engagement allows us to establish a supportive relationship and build a personalised care plan from the very start, whether for a first-time pregnancy or one with specific concerns based on a previous experience.

A structured yet flexible schedule of appointments marks the beginning of an antenatal journey at NMC. With the first visit being comprehensive, we cover a patients detailed medical history, perform physical examinations and measure baseline blood and urine tests. To confirm a due date, a dating and viability ultrasound scan is usually performed. Regular subsequent appointments are booked after that. These are meant to monitor blood pressure, weight and the baby’s growth through fundal height measurements.

To measure key diagnostic milestones, the Nuchal Translucency Scan is performed at 11-14 weeks to assess early risk. This is followed by the Anomaly Scan at 18-22 weeks which provides a detailed foetal anatomy check. If required, growth scans in the third trimester and advanced screenings like Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) are performed. Each visit is not only a chance to look into physical milestones but is a chance listen to the baby’s heartbeat, discuss family wellbeing and address any questions.
