Dr. Punekar worked in the UK for 16 years, where he conducted general medical training in Liverpool and completed his specialist training at the Northern Deanery. He was a radiology consultant in Dubai at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UK) from 2009 to 2014. During this time, he was a core member of the multidisciplinary teams for GI cancers in the West Yorkshire Cancer network and for IBD (inflammatory bowel disease). He moved to Abu Dhabi in 2014 and was Head of the Department and clinical radiologist at King's College Hospitals Clinics, Abu Dhabi, before joining Mediclinic. He was the Regional Lead and Head of the Department for Radiology in Mediclinic. He was actively involved in oncology imaging, chairing oncology MDTs. His practice also included non-vascular intervention.

He is a member of the General Medical Council (UK), the Royal College of Radiologists (UK), and the British Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology.
