What is Cosmetic Dermatology?
Sitting at the intersection of medical science and aesthetics, cosmetic dermatology is unlike clinical dermatology, which looks at treating active disease like eczema or skin cancer. Cosmetic dermatology mainly improves the appearance of skin, hair and nails that are otherwise considered healthy but start to show signs of ageing, damage or genetic predisposition.
The distinctions are not completely apart, however. For instance, acne is an inflammatory condition at its core but has the ability to leave scars behind, which then become a cosmetic concern. Rosacea, is known to cause redness and visible vessels, making it both a medical diagnosis and an aesthetic frustration for patients. A medical dermatologist treats things like active eczema or skin cancer, which differentiates them from cosmetic dermatologist who looks to address concerns like fine lines, volume loss, pigmentation irregularities, unwanted hair and textural roughness.
