Dr. Joana Coelho is a Family Medicine Physician with over 14 years of clinical experience across the Portuguese National Health Service and private practice in both Portugal and Dubai.
With advanced postgraduate training in Pain Medicine, Medical Acupuncture, and Neuromodulation, Dr. Coelho combines these disciplines to provide a comprehensive, patient-centred approach focused on identifying and treating the underlying causes of dysfunction rather than simply managing symptoms.
Her clinical practice is dedicated to Functional Neuromodulation, a non-invasive technique that stimulates the nervous system to promote neuroplasticity, restore normal nervous system function, and optimize movement, pain modulation, and organ function. She is among the pioneers of Functional Neuromodulation in Dubai and has extensive experience applying this innovative approach in the assessment and treatment of complex neurological and musculoskeletal conditions.
By addressing dysfunctions within the nervous system, Dr. Coelho treats a broad range of conditions, including acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain, postural dysfunction, sports injuries, dizziness and balance disorders, headaches, fibromyalgia, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), urinary incontinence, dysmenorrhea, gastrointestinal symptoms, chronic fatigue, brain fog, anxiety, and other disorders associated with nervous system dysregulation.
She has completed postgraduate qualifications in Pain Medicine, Medical Acupuncture, and Travel Medicine, and is currently undertaking an Advanced Postgraduate Program Advanced Neuromodulation at Faculdade Focus, Brazil, reflecting her commitment to continuous professional development and innovation in this rapidly evolving field.
Prior to her clinical practice in the UAE, Dr. Coelho coordinated Smoking Cessation Programs and worked as a physician for Teladoc Health, providing Second Medical Opinion services to international patients.
Dr. Coelho serves as a Board Member of the Portuguese Medical Association College of Competence in Medical Acupuncture, reflecting her active contribution to the advancement of the specialty.
