Matthew Wells

Group General Counsel

Matthew is the Group General Counsel for the NMC Healthcare and a member of the Group Leadership Team.

Matthew leads a team of legal professionals who provide commercially focused and pragmatic counsel to support the day-to-day operation of the group’s healthcare businesses, as well as overseeing company secretarial and governance matters. Matthew also provides key support to enable the restructuring and transformation of NMC following the group’s much publicised de-listing from the London Stock Exchange in 2020 and subsequent administrations in UK and UAE. Originally working for clients on corporate mergers and acquisitions, having trained and qualified with UK national law firm Mills & Reeve, Matthew moved into industry 12 years ago and has been working in-house in the healthcare and infrastructure sectors since.

Prior to joining NMC, Matthew was the Chief Legal & Commercial Officer of Enviromena Power Systems in Dubai supporting the company’s international renewable energy development and contractor services business, including change management, restructuring and transformation initiatives. While based in the UAE, Matthew has helped establish Stumpf Capital (formerly Stumpf Energy) in Abu Dhabi Global Market and worked as senior projects counsel for ACWA Power in Dubai. He has advised his internal clients on a broad range of legal and governance matters in markets as diverse as South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Thailand, Philippines, Mexico, Australia, Italy, and UK, often working closely with, and managing, local counsel. Before relocating to UAE from UK, Matthew worked for EDF Renewables UK in London.

Matthew is an English law qualified lawyer, licensed to practice by the Senior Courts of England and Wales since 2008. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) awarded by the University of Southampton, and is a graduate of BPP Law School, London. He is a native English speaker and speaks French with limited working proficiency.
