NMC's Code sets out the ethical standards and behaviours expected from everyone who works for or on behalf of NMC. It establishes a framework of accountability, integrity, and responsible decision-making, which benefits patients, employees, and all stakeholders.
Our Code serves as the foundation of our ethics and compliance programme. It sets out our commitments and the expected standards and behaviour, while our ethics and compliance programme ensures our business and operations align with those commitments and behaviours. It includes policies and procedures covering various areas, training and awareness raising, and the reporting and investigation process. Risk assessments, controls, and monitoring mechanisms are also part of our programme to ensure the consistent practice of our values and the Code.
Our ethics and compliance policies are accessible to NMC’s employees through the Ethics and Compliance page on our intranet. If you need assistance, please reach out to the Ethics & Compliance Office for further guidance.
Integrity Line is the name of the independent reporting system administered as part of NMC’s Speak Up process. It enables employees, patients, stakeholders and the public to report concerns, ethical violations, or suspected misconduct anonymously or confidentially.
We want to hear from you about any misconduct or concerns related to the issues covered in the Code, or any other ethical issues or misconduct related to NMC, even if you do not think it is covered by the Code. This includes:
Reporting is easy – you can submit a report confidentially through the Integrity Line’s online portal, call the telephone number stated on the portal or contact our Ethics and Compliance Office. Employees may also contact their local Ethics & Compliance Champion. We take all reports seriously, regardless of the channel, and ensure a thorough investigation of each concern.
Yes, reports can be made anonymously. Although we encourage reporters to share their identities, we understand not everyone feels comfortable doing this. Our reporting channels are designed to protect the confidentiality of those who wish to remain anonymous.
Once a report is filed, our investigations team will initiate a thorough investigation. This process may involve gathering evidence, interviewing relevant parties, and analysing the facts. We will take appropriate action based on the findings and ensure that all necessary steps are taken to address the issue.
No, NMC encourages speaking up. Our Anti-Retaliation Policy strictly prohibits retaliation against individuals who report concerns in good faith, and we have procedures in place to protect reporters and promptly investigate allegations of retaliation, taking appropriate action.
