Consultant - Neuro Surgery
Dr. Gopalakrishnan began his neurosurgery residency training in Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), India after an illustrious undergraduate training studded with excellent academic achievements and a creditable post-graduate training in General Surgery from Medical College, Trivandrum, India. He also cleared the prestigious Membership Part 1 and 2 Exams of the Royal College (Edinburgh) as he completed his basic surgical training. SCTIMST is an Institute of National Importance and serves as tertiary referral center for cardio-vascular, thoracic and neurologic diseases. It is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
He completed his neurosurgical training summa cum laude following which he began his career as Assistant Professor in the same institute. During his early neurosurgical career, he operated a wide variety of cases both cranial and spine with special focus on paediatrics. During his stint of around 8 years in the institute, he has performed a significant number of complex brain surgeries. He was also involved in the surgical training of residents.
In July 2013, Dr. Gopalakrishnan went to British Columbia Children’s Hospital (BCCH), Vancouver, Canada for a year to do a fellowship in Pediatric Neurosurgery. He gained sufficient experience in performing a large variety of pediatric surgeries for brain tumors, hydrocephalus and congenital problems. He was fortunate to learn minimally invasive selective dorsal rhizotomies for children with spasticity under the mentorship of Prof. Paul Steinbok. He was also part of the craniofacial and spina bifida program. He was introduced to minimally invasive endoscopically assisted surgery and postoperative helmet molding for selected infants with craniosynostosis.
Dr. Gopalakrishnan worked at the University Hospital in Lausanne, Switzerland as Chef de Clinique for 16 months. He learnt the technical nuances of complex spine surgery with the use of O-arm and minimally invasive tubular retractor system. Prior to Joining NMC Healthcare, he worked at M.S Ramaiah Medical College and Hospitals, a leading tertiary care hospital, as Professor of Neurosurgery. Here he was involved with all types of neurosurgical cases including pediatric, skull base, vascular, neurooncology and spine.
Dr. Gopalakrishnan’s has a large series of academic presentations and publications in peer reviewed international journals. He is a reviewer for many journals and a member of the Neurological Society of India and Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), USA.
His areas of neurosurgical interests include pediatric cases like hydrocephalus, spinal dysraphism, craniosynostosis and tumors. He also specializes in degenerative and traumatic spine conditions, skull base tumors and neuro-oncology. He is fluent in English, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam.
