
Dr. Shankar Ayyappan Kutty is a highly experienced Consultant Neurosurgeon with extensive expertise in both brain and spine surgery. Prior to joining NMC, he served as the Senior Consultant and Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS), Kerala—a 600-bed tertiary care hospital and the first multi-specialty institution in India to receive NABH accreditation.
During his tenure at MIMS, Dr. Shankar led a wide spectrum of complex neurosurgical procedures, including intracranial aneurysm clipping, skull base tumor excision, spinal tumor surgery and craniofacial surgeries. He also collaborated with Surgical Oncologists, Plastic Surgeons, and Maxillofacial Surgeons to perform intricate multi-disciplinary operations.
He played a pivotal role in establishing a fully-fledged Neurosurgery Department at Lakeshore Hospital, Kochi. Dr. Shankar holds an MBBS from Government Medical College, Kozhikode, and an M.Ch. in Neurosurgery from the esteemed Christian Medical College & Hospital, Vellore. He further enhanced his surgical skills through a clinical fellowship in Skull Base and Vascular Neurosurgery at Fujita University, Japan. Additionally, he holds an MBA in Hospital Management and was awarded the Fellowship of the European Board of Neurological Sciences (FEBNS) in 2015.
He has also been involved in the peer review process for a number of journals such as BMJ Ophthalmology, World Journal of Surgery, Indian Journal of Neurotrauma, Indian Journal of Neurosurgery, Cureus (https://cureus.com), and Frontiers (https://www.frontiersin.org). He has authored or co-authored chapters in several neurosurgical textbooks, including Indian Clinical Neurosurgery, Volume II (Ed. AK Singh, 2002); Hemorrhagic Stroke: An Update (Ed. A Agarwal, 2017); and Lumbar Interbody Fusions – A Primer (Ed. Manjila, Mroz & Steinmetz, 2018).
Dr. Shankar is a member of several renowned professional bodies, including the European Association of Neurological Sciences, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (USA), and the Neurological Society of India. He is also an ATLS instructor with the American College of Surgeons.
He is fluent in English, Hindi, Malayalam, and Tamil.
